Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said the government’s decision to allow Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawals of up to RM10,000 demonstrates compassion for the people.
“This demonstrates that the government is deeply concerned about the economic condition that has plagued the people since the Covid-19 outbreak, which has impacted jobs and businesses,” the Kinabatangan MP said.
Bung, who is also the Sabah Umno Chief, said this in a statement here on Thursday, while complimenting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s decision.
Bung said that the subject has been raised before, with him mentioning it at a debate session in the Dewan Rakyat two weeks ago. This is good news for those who are truly hoping for the withdrawal because they are living a harsh and desperate life as a result of the Covid-19.
“Of course, this is good news for those who have had a terrible life owing to the Covid-19, and it is especially pleasing for the Muslim community, who will be celebrating Ramadan, and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, as it can undoubtedly lighten their burden,” he said.
Bung, on the other hand, cautioned contributors who wanted to withdraw their funds to spend only what they needed.
“Contributors who wish to withdraw their money should do so cautiously, taking into account the necessity and urgency of today’s requirements,” he said.
Bung said that those who do not require the money immediately should leave their savings in the EPF because they must strike a balance between future difficulties and current necessities.
