Table & Apron (T&A) is a Malaysian restaurant at heart although founder Marcus Low and his team often have a few inventive surprises in store to keep things fresh and interesting for guests (as their paying customers are referred to). Having chalked up 7 years – a commendable achievement in view of the prolonged spate of MCOs and intense competition in Klang Valley’s cut-throat F&B scene – the T&A team has even brought Universal Bakehouse under its ambit. A recent visit reveals some new offerings worthy of your attention.

Ulam Rice A mound of rice topped with cubes of crisp fried mung bean and split pea tempeh, raw and toasted coconut flakes. Accompaniments include chopped long beans, chopped fresh mint, chopped daun kesom, kaffir lime leaves, blanched bean sprouts, chunks of ikan tongkol, roasted peanuts, curry leaf-infused oil, a kalamansi lime and spiced kicap manis. To enjoy this rice speciality, squeeze the kalamansi lime over the rice, pour the dark soy dressing over it and stir everything thoroughly. The melding of textures and co-mingling of flavours will result in an incredibly tasty dish.

Pineapple Ketchup Glazed Ribs with Tamarind and Chilli Dip Juicy fall off the bone ribs suffused with sticky tropical fruity-sweet and savoury flavours. Amp it up with the tamarind-chilli dip for an extra boost of punchy heat.

Fish N’ Chips Using local catfish instead of imported fish is a masterstroke here. Fleshy and oozing with natural oil, the sizeable chunks of battered fish accompanied by thick-cut fries go down a treat, coated in T&A’s signature crunchy-crisp buckwheat batter. It comes dangerously close to eclipsing the fried chicken…

Sanbanto Pork Chop Dotted with caramelised garlic pips, this rib shoulder cut veers titillatingly close to menacingly lean but oh joy! The slices are trimmed with just enough fat to ensure textural moistness. Served with Chimichurri & Charred Baby Kailan on the side, you’d wolf this down without any complaints, trust me.

Roasted Cauliflower, Ricotta, Pickled Onion and Breadcrumbs A delicious vegetable dish nobody would mind eating. Slightly charred at the edges, spiked with slivers of tart onion pickles and daubed with creamy ricotta, it’s not green but good for ya.

For the uninitiated, the dishes listed aren’t the only good stuff to eat at Table & Apron. The restaurant is famed for its buckwheat fried chicken – personally, I’d rate it one of the best in town – and it’s pricier than most but worth every ringgit once you bite into the shatter-crisp batter and juicy chicken. Try the house-crafted drinks too, infused with Malaysian trends and Asian influences.

This simple, austere restaurant is constantly packed so reservations are highly recommended. Service is stellar here – personally, I have yet to encounter a bad meal or had any negative experience (touch wood) on past visits. Checks with friends reveal equally positive experiences which prove T&A’s 7-year track record is indeed something to shout about.
