As we are allowed to travel between cities and states already, I am sure there are some people who’d love to hop on their next flights ASAP. There are many places of interest in Malaysia, without a doubt. However, if you are planning your next trip, perhaps you should give Miri a try.

Where is Miri?

Miri is a city located north of Sarawak, Borneo Island. It’s 2 hours away from Brunei and has much to offer. Although it may not be like some other locations that are worthy of a visit, it’s still good anyway.

Where should you go in Miri?

Here are some places to visit if you ever plan on visiting the city of Miri.

1. Coco Cabana

Coco cabana is a seaside recreation space where locals usually go jogging at. It’s quite common to see people going there with their families or with their friends to unwind at the end of the day. At times, you may see people enjoying the sunset while having a picnic there.

It is also an event space where organizers will run events at that location. I may add that it’s one of the most popular event spaces in the city besides having events in malls and hotels.

There are plenty of food stalls there available through the evening when it’s less hot. Besides stalls selling food, you can also see stalls selling balloons and other kids’ toys for the young ones.

2. Marina ParkCity with Times Square

Marina ParkCity is located not too far from Coco Cabana. The location itself is inclusive of Times Square also. The entire area is developed by the same developer anyway so they are a location that is very “in theme” with each other.

Marina ParkCity and Times Square are more of a foodie’s heaven area. Most of the shops here are either F&B restaurants with some boutique inns or chic clothing stores (among others). There are a few companies that are located there too but most shops there are restaurants and cafes.

If you don’t know where to eat, it’s worth visiting this area. Most of the F&B shops here are also pubs that open late into the night.

3. Bintang Megamall

Bintang Megamall goes back decades serving local and Bruneian shoppers. You can see quite a number of international chain stores in this shopping mall, including Parkson. It also has a cinema – Golden Screen Cinemas located on the top floor.

It’s the busiest during weekends as everyone comes out to unwind. Before Covid times, throngs of visitors come from Brunei to visit this shopping mall too.

4. Permaisuri Mall and Imperial Mall

Permaisuri Mall and Imperial Mall are located next to each other and are linked by a sky bridge. They are both owned by the same developer, Boulevard Group of Companies. Both malls are situated not far from Bintang Megamall.

These 2 malls are a popular destination not just for locals but also for Bruneian shoppers before the Covid lockdown. It has a lot of international chain stores too especially in Permaisuri Mall. It also has a cinema on the top floor – TGV Cinemas.

5. Niah National Park

Niah National Park may not be within Miri but it is a popular destination for people who love nature and hiking. There are tour packages for people who love nature. Niah National Park isn’t just a park. It has its cave too, Niah Cave.

A lot of things can be learned about the Niah Cave as it has a history going back as far as 38,000 BC. The cave shows “favourable living conditions for human beings” as there are prehistoric human remains found there before.

6. Wireless Walk

Wireless Walk is more of a stretch of hawker stalls located opposite Imperial Mall and Permaisuri Mall. At Wireless Walk, you can find plenty of local hawker stalls selling food from Chinese to Malay to Indigenous food.

You may find some stalls opened during the daytime. However, most stalls (if not all) open at night. If you are not feeling the food in Permaisuri Mall or Imperial Mall, perhaps you’d like to try the food here at Wireless Walk.

Conclusion

Miri may not have much to offer as some other places in Malaysia. However, its humble offerings are enough to attract people for some quick and easy weekend fun.
