African swine flu: pork supplies, sales in Sarawak down by half

MIRI – The African swine flu has halved the local pork market and related food businesses in Sibu over the last month.

During a visit to the pork market in Sibu town today, Bukit Assek state assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the authorities are doing what they can to rid the pig farms of the infections.

“Since last month or so, the pork supplies and sales have been reduced by half.

“The local authority and the veterinary department are doing their best to clean up the pig farms to stop the spread of the disease. The disease will not infect humans.”

Chieng assured that the culling of infected pigs is being carried out properly.

Last month, residents in Sibu town complained of air pollution and potential health issues due to the mass culling of infected pigs.

Over the past month, the African swine flu had spread from Sibu town to nearby settlements. – The Vibes, March 3, 2022
