LABUAN: The Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce said that it appreciated the government’s decision to implement the new minimum wage of RM1,500 only on certain companies, adding that it was a fair and realistic decision reflecting the government had considered the views of industry players.
Its Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said: “As it is not clear which would be the companies that would have to pay higher wages, it is hoped that it would only apply to sectors such as oil and gas, plantation, timber and financial institutions, to name a few, since these sectors consistently enjoy good returns and not severely bruised by the Covid-19 pandemic, while other enterprise, especially medium ones, should be spared because they have yet to recover and opportunity should be given.”
