Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who is tied to Everton, is having his assets frozen by the European Union.

The oligarch, who has close ties to the country's ruler Vladimir Putin, is part of further sanctions announced by the EU on Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine.

Usmanov's USM Holdings is a key sponsor of Everton, while the club's owner Farhad Moshiri is a chairman of that company.

In its reasoning, the EU Council said: "Alisher Usmanov is a pro-Kremlin oligarch with particularly close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin".

It added that he "actively supported materially or financially Russian decision-makers responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilisation of Ukraine".

There is no statement from Usmanov on the matter as yet, per the BBC.
