SEMPORNA: The Election Commission (EC) has been asked to hold the Bugaya state by-election simultaneously with the general election (GE), which is expected to be held no later than next year.

Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) Sabah Vice President Apas Nawawi Saking said the vacancy of the Bugaya people’s representative in the Semporna parliamentary constituency needed to be filled to address various problems faced by the people of the area.

“Villagers affected by the pandemic complain that they cannot get food basket aid, while the problem of the village in settlements that have been burnt cannot be dealt with,” said Nawawi, who is also Star Silam (in Lahad Datu) Division Chief.

Nawawi said this when officiating the formation of the Bugaya Star Division led by Ahmat Daud Awang in Kg Bangau-Bangau, here.

In his speech, Ahmat said Star was focusing on improving the settlement of Kg Bangau-Bangau, a gazetted village.

Ahmat, a retired senior teacher of a secondary school here, hoped the gazetting of the Kg Bangau-Bangau settlement can help fire victims over the past few years to return to restore their homes.

Meanwhile, Nawawi is confident that Star will be able to contribute to the victory of the Sabah People’s Coalition (GRS) in the Bugaya state constituency if given the opportunity to contest in the by-election to be held.
