Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) said the reopening of borders starting Apr 1 is a crucial step for the tourism industry and in line with what the group has been pushing for.
“We can finally start rebuilding the tourism sector and contributing to Malaysia's economic recovery,” said Matta President Datuk Tan Kok Liang in a statement.
Malaysia has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, with close to 80 percent of the total population fully vaccinated and of these 99 percent are fully vaccinated adults.
More than half of the population have already received their third dose.
“It makes sense to open our borders while maintaining updated SOPs to ensure public health safety," Tan said.
“Local tourism players have already made preparations to welcome international tourists and have always maintained a clean and safe environment for everyone by adopting safety procedures.”
