KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) leads in popular votes in the Johor state election (PRN) yesterday with 445,085 votes or 66.25 percent, far ahead of its other challengers.
Pakatan Harapan (PH), represented by DAP and AMANAH obtained 168,518 votes or 25.08 percent, while Perikatan Nasional (PN), comprising BERSATU, PAS and GERAKAN which contested for all the 56 state seats secured 25,865 votes or 3.85 percent.
The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA), which made its debut in the election garnered 22,884 votes or 3.4 percent and PKR, which contested using its own logo obtained 9,439 votes or 1.4 percent.
Popular vote refers to the number of votes won by each party or its coalition.
In terms of votes obtained by the contesting parties, Umno secured 380,519 votes or 56.6 percent of the total votes, while DAP with159,769 votes or 23.3 percent; MCA (5.4 percent), MIC (4.2 percent), MUDA (3.4 percent), BERSATU (2.7 percent), PKR (1.4 percent), AMANAH (1.3 percent) and PAS (1.1 percent).
BN was returned to power with more than a two-thirds majority win in the 15th state election, capturing 40 of the 56 seats contested.
Umno contributed 33 seats to the victory, MCA four and MIC three.
PH won 11 seats, Perikatan Nasional (PN) three, PKR one and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) one seat in the polls, which saw youths aged between 18 and 20 voting for the first time in elections in the country.
The polls saw 239 candidates from 15 political parties vying for 56 seats.
A total of 1,426,573 people or 54.92 per cent of the registered voters went to the polls yesterday.-Bernama
