If you are someone who has never worked in another state before in Malaysia, you may not know what to look for. Some people are quite lucky as when they are relocating, their companies may have everything for them already. If you are not one of those people, things may be a bit harder for you.

However, things do not have to be that difficult. If you are relocating to another state whether to find jobs or to start a new one, you’re bound to run into difficulties. I have put together a quick list of things for you to read through before relocating over.

Looking for a place to stay in the first thing you should look for when relocating. Malaysia has a few places for you to look for places to rent:

  • iBilik
  • Preperty Guru
  • RoomSOS
  • Mudah.my
  • Various Facebook [For Rent/For Sale] groups
  • Mitula
  • Trovit

There are quite a few sites you can find rooms or entire apartments and houses to rent or buy. Mind you, sometimes you may not be able to reach the renters’ phone numbers or emails. If you experience this, move on and find something else.

I would also suggest that if you see a room advertised from more than 6 months ago (sometimes 3 months), it’s quite likely the room may have been taken already. You still can contact the advertiser to ask nonetheless but don’t get your hopes up.

While looking for a place to rent, it’s important to consider a few things. You may think about your needs when you move to a new place. If you don’t, it can cause you a lot of unnecessary stress and trauma.

a. Accessibility to public transport systems

The most important thing to consider is the availability and accessibility to public transport systems. Is it close to public transportation? Are there a lot of ride-hailing services available 24/7?

Here’s the thing with public transport – sometimes the interval of busses and trains are not on time. On some days the intervals may be very frequent. Some other days you may not even see a single bus for hours around. Make sure you stay in an area where public transport comes frequently.

b. Housemates

I will just loosely refer to people renting the same apartment or houses as you as housemates to make things easier. When you are renting, you can always ask for your housemates’ background and what they do.

You can ask if your housemates will all be female or will it be a mix of male and female? Also, you can ask if they are working adults or are still students. If you are living in an extra rented room with a family, it’s going to be a different matter altogether.

Make sure that the housemates you live with have pleasant personalities. You will not want to live with housemates who are monsters, will you?

c. Cleanliness and hygiene

With the whole Covid thing still going on, it’s always good to take extra precautions when it comes to the house’s cleanliness and hygiene. Even if there weren’t Covid going on, it’s still good to look into the general cleanliness of the home.

Make sure that the house is always kept in a clean state. If it takes a housemate’s turn to clean the house, you should contribute to cleaning too. No one likes living in dirty quarters.

d. Safety

Safety is, of course, one of the most important things to consider when you move in. If you live in an apartment or condo, see if it has good security. If you live in a house, see if the neighbourhood has had a history of break-ins before.

Living in a neighbourhood or an apartment where security is low to none, you will be left to worry about your safety. Only God knows if you will leave your place alive the next minute!

e. Surrounding amenities

When living at a location, look into the amenities of the apartment or house. Are there any places nearby to eat? Are there any banks available? Check to see if your rented place is close to public transport too.

If it fills out all of the above then it’s pretty much an okay place to reside in. Just make sure that you are street smart when you are living in your new place.

f. Budget

Look at the rental too when you are looking for a new place to stay. Some locations have rentals that are above average rental. Those locations tend to be prime locations most times. If it is not within your budget you may have to look elsewhere.

Rentals tend to be cheaper the further away you are from the city centre. However, it can differ from city to city, state to state.

Also, check with the landlords or house owners if the rental includes bills and utilities? Or are bills and utilities calculated separately? Find out all this information from your landlords.

Bottom Line

Looking for new places to stay isn’t necessarily hard. It does take a bit of work and searching. However, once you get it, you will get the hang of it.
