This week, Seagate Technology Holdings PLC launched its Lyve Cloud and Lyve Labs in Singapore. Lyve Cloud is Seagate’s premiere cloud Storage-as-a-Service platform and Lyve Labs is a collaborative innovation hub to create solutions that harness the flow of data.

Seagate chose Singapore as the first market in Asia to launch its cloud storage platform and innovation centre, with the goal of supporting Singapore's digital-first strategy to transform the country through technology and drive the growth of the region's developing digital economy.

Singapore has been undergoing its own digital transformation, which the government is promoting as a top priority. According to Dave Mosley, Seagate CEO, the country has made great progress in a short period of time, with the government digitising around 94% of its services end-to-end for its citizens.

“Lyve Cloud and Lyve Labs represent Seagate’s evolution to serve mass data ecosystems,” said Dave. “With Singapore being a hub for regional and global industry-leading businesses, innovators and disruptive startups, it was a natural choice for us to bring these offerings to Singapore. I am delighted to mark Seagate’s 40th anniversary in Singapore with these transformative platforms.”

Dave further explained that the goal of Lyve Labs is to bring people together, get the creative juices flowing, and then provide them access to a data repository like the Lyve Cloud.

The launch event was also attended by Dr Beh Swan Gin, Chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board and he stated that Seagate has been a big contributor to the Singapore Electronic Sector for the past 40 years. The announcement that Singapore will be the first country in the region to host its Lyve Cloud business and Lyve Labs innovation centre is a continuation of this long-standing partnership.

“Through Lyve in Singapore, Seagate will deliver greater value for industries in the digital economy via its innovative edge storage solutions coupled with high-capacity converged infrastructure for cloud storage,” said Dr Beh Swan Gin.

Lyve Cloud, a New Way to Data

Dr Beh Swan Gin brought up a crucial point: The Global Datasphere's expansion is never-ending. The core (traditional and cloud data centres), the edge, and the endpoints are the three key areas where digitisation takes place and digital content is created, according to IDC. And the Global Datasphere is the aggregate of all this data, whether it is created, acquired, or copied, and it is rapidly expanding.

He cited IDC's projection that the Global Datasphere will rise from 33 Zettabytes (ZB) in 2018 to 175 Zettabytes (ZB) by 2025.

"Manufacturers are harnessing data in every step of their supply chain. Enterprises amass massive amounts of data on us, their customers. While customers integrate real-time data services into our daily lives, yet only a fraction of this data is stored as organisations grapple with the cost and security of storing and moving data," he continued.

Additionally, according to Seagate's Rethink Data report, businesses struggle to effectively leverage their data, with up to 68% of data available to them going unused. Lyve Cloud promises to lower the cost and complexity of storage infrastructure, which stops businesses from fully utilising their data. By adopting Lyve Cloud in scenarios like data analytics, data repository for content collaboration, and backup/disaster recovery, organisations may break data silos in diverse systems and technologies, activate data for business, and save over 70% of their storage expenditures.

The launch of Lyve Cloud in Singapore, according to Ravi Naik, Seagate's Executive Vice -President of storage services and CIO, will benefit organisations with access to Seagate's cloud solutions by providing real multi-cloud flexibility, world-class security, and long-term cost predictability.

“Lyve Cloud empowers businesses to manage and transfer mass data easily, rapidly and securely across various storage environments to accelerate their digital transformation and innovation agendas,” he added.

Drive Data-Harnessing Innovations in Business Scenarios

With the launch, Singapore becomes the first country chosen by Seagate for its Lyve Labs expansion into Asia. Lyve Labs brings together aspiring innovators and startups to develop data-harvesting solutions for customers and foster collaboration to create forward-thinking technology solutions that benefit the broader community. With Lyve Cloud at its core, the innovation lab will enable companies to construct large-scale data management infrastructure, giving their data operations great availability, cost predictability, and cloud flexibility. Lyve Laboratories Singapore, in collaboration with labs in Israel and the United States, will connect Singapore's technological expertise with other like-minded entrepreneurs around the world seeking to make a positive difference.

Lyve Labs Singapore will launch a series of nurturing programmes as part of its mission to give simple, secure, and effective ways to work with exabytes of data to Singapore's startup community. Lyve Cloud for Startups, The Innovator of the Year Award, and a series of webinars and events will be part of this. Lyve Labs will also assist entrepreneurs in forming relationships with technical experts and innovators in order to develop Proof-Of-Concept (POC) solutions.
