Kota Kinabalu: In the run-up to the 15th General Election expected by many to be held this year as Malaysia enters the endemic phase of the Covid-19 pandemic period, a lawyer who attended the pro-state rights group Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights (Sabar) Roland Cheng is to contest the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary constituency for the West Malaysia-based Gerak Independent (GI) reform movement.
Cheng’s involvement with GI is not linked to Sabar which is a non-political citizens’ group concerned with Sabah rights and matters related to MA63 and contributing ideas and resources to the authorities, and GI is targeting to contest in 10 seats in the 15th General Election.
On Jan 15, the Saturday Sabar’s launch was officiated, Cheng moderating the question-and-answer session, called on the attendees and online audience to remember the day as a game-changing day for action for the betterment of Sabah.
Cheng: “Where do we go from here? We have heard about things in the past that were wrong. What do we do? Do we have the same stories to tell our grandchildren, or we are going to say, No! We did something. That’s what Sabar is all about.”
According to GI member and lawyer Siti Kasim: “You want to bring change in Malaysia, you need good representatives in Parliament, and only then can you have good policies and law. This is the only way to bring about change. This is because only in Parliament can you change policies and the law.”
