Vladimir Putin, driven into a corner by the world, yet again, fought back, giving the order to put Russian nuclear deterrent forces on high alert.

He had reportedly assigned additional personnel to boost command posts of all of Russia’s nuclear forces.

In case you missed the point, it simply means all components of Russian nuclear forces are battle-ready. Just waiting for him to push the button.

Let me try to break that down for you a little more. The components mentioned include the following:

  1. Strategic missile forces overseeing land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles. These are mostly on land somewhere on Russian soil.
  2. Northern and Pacific Fleets that have submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles. Submarines are mobile. They are now in Northern Russian waters or in the Pacific Ocean and ready to move on command from Moscow.
  3. The long-range aviation that has a fleet of nuclear-capable strategic bombers. These would take off from any airbase destined for Europe or North America or anywhere else as Putin sees fit.

So what, you might say, the nuclear bombs are not likely to affect us in Malaysia? You are right, most would target cities in Europe or North America. There are no known targets of interest to Russia in this country.

Except perhaps in nearby Singapore where US warships do stopover for normal servicing.

However, let me be impertinent and ask you, are we in Malaysia prepared for a nuclear war?

Or do our people know what they should do in case of a nuclear attack? Or even a nuclear fallout?

If, in the unlikely event some trigger happy crew members of a Russian submarine decided to push a button aimed at an American or a European vessel berthed in Singapore harbour, what should people in Johor do to escape a nuclear fallout?

Growing up in a small town on Long Island, New York in the 1960s, I saw someone who was in a similar state of ignorance about a nuclear attack, did post on a wall, a poster, which parodied the predicament that might befall our fellow men in Johor.

I have reproduced here, from a blogger “Midlife Crisis Hawaii” who still remembers the signages common in the ’60s and ’70s. I have posted on this page to serve as a guide for you, in case of a nuclear war or a fallout.

After you are done navel-gazing or pondering on how you did in the recent Johor elections and what to do in case of nuclear fallout, follow the instructions provided on the poster until you reach the last word; “Goodbye”.

Good luck my friend, wherever you may be! In Johor, Hawaii or the town of Stony Brook on Long Island, New York. I’ll be thinking of you if and when Putin decided to push that button of no return!
