KUALA LUMPUR – Yesterday, Malaysians joined many Muslims around the world to mark the start of Ramadan, as they begin a month-long fasting period before celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
From sunrise to sunset, Muslims will fast, not just to experience hunger and thirst, but to reflect on their deeds and worship.
In the evenings, Muslims will be in mosques to perform their obligatory prayers and the optional tarawih prayers that are especially marked for Ramadan.
Aside from worship, the fasting month also sees many “pasar Ramadan” or Ramadan bazaars, now popularly called “param”. It also means the majority of hotels will be offering a slew of buffets, some even priced up to RM300 per person.
In any case, with the travel flexibility given by the government this year, Muslims can take comfort in fasting and praying without worrying about strict health standard operating procedures.
