Manchester United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick says the next man in charge must be given time to rebuild the squad.

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino are considered the leading contenders for the job.

"Both Manchester City and Liverpool have been built together and recruited for a period of five or six years, all under the premises of how the coaches want to play. This is what has to happen. That's how far I can go right now. I told the board that this is what must happen," said the German.

"When the new head coach is in place, it must be: 'How does he want to play and what type of player do we need for that?'

"Then we come back to DNA, speed, physics, pace - what do we need? This team does not lack technical players, it may need more physics. It takes the right decision and where you want to go - what type of player, what type of manager - and then in each transfer window try to get the best possible. This is possible. This is not rocket science. It must be done."
