Kota Kinabalu: A 45-year-old civil servant was jailed three days and fined RM15,000 for three counts of using false quotations amounting to RM163,437.

Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manat meted out the sentence to Mohd Syamsul Jikan after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt against Syamsul, Tuesday.

On the first to third counts, Syamsul, who is currently suspended from work, was jailed one day and fined RM5,000 or three months’ jail for each count.

The court ordered Syamsul to serve the jail sentence concurrently.

Syamsul was found guilty of three charges of dishonestly using fake quotations to supply items to the Cure and Care Rehabilitation Centre (CCRC) in Papar.

He committed the offences between January and October 2015 at the CCRC office in Jalan Papar-Beaufort.

Syamsul was convicted under Section 471/465 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to two years or fine, or both, on conviction.

Only one defence was called to testify during the hearing at the defence stage.

Syamsul was discharged and acquitted from 33 charges against him without his defence being called.

However, the prosecution had appealed against the decision and the High Court had called Syamsul to enter defence on three of the 33 charges against him.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nartiah F.M Sambatan appeared for the prosecution while counsel Hamid Ismail defended Syamsul.
