MIRI – Sarawak DAP has set up a committee to form an umbrella alliance of all opposition parties in Sarawak in preparation for the upcoming 15th general election.
Its state chairman Chong Chieng Jen said in a press statement that the decision was made during a leadership meeting in Sibu last night.
“We are setting up a committee towards forming cooperation with all opposition parties in Sarawak.
“We are open and willing to work with all those who aspire to fight against Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
“This cooperation of all like-minded opposition parties is vital to save the rakyat who are suffering hardship from the incompetency of the current government that has caused spiralling hikes in cost of living, racism and return of corrupted leadership,” he said.
The Padungan assemblyman added that DAP will seek a meeting with the rest of its Pakatan Harapan coalition partners in the state – Sarawak PKR and Sarawak Amanah, saying that all of them will be part of the “united front”.
On April 4, Chong recalled the recently concluded state polls in a Facebook post and pointed out the devastating defeat the opposition suffered at the hands of incumbent GPS.
“From the results of the 2021 Sarawak election, it is obvious that there is a need for the major opposition parties in Sarawak to work together to take on GPS.
“No doubt, regionalism sentiment was strong in the 2021 Sarawak election. However, the results in the Sarawak election also shows that purely fighting on regionalism politics will not get a party anywhere.
“In the last Sarawak election, PSB contested 70 seats and only won four, while DAP contested 26 seats, winning two. The candidates of all other so-called local opposition parties lost with most of them losing their election deposits,” he said. – The Vibes, April 6, 2022
