Kota Kinabalu: A sales campaign that markets Malaysian products including from Sabah via an international online marketplace in Malaysia, eJazmine.com, has made its debut in Brunei which marked another milestone in the digital economy.
A government agency, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), appointed eJazmine.com to embark on the digital economy collaboration to tap global markets via its online platform.
The online platform's Chairman and founder, Datuk Seri Mohd Rizal Mohd Yusof, said "Jelajah Ramadhan Brunei Sales" is expected to attract about 500 participants from more than 30 countries including Malaysia to market and sell a variety of goods including local products to Bruneians.
“We welcome more interested parties to participate in the sales campaign in Brunei in conjunction with Ramadhan as there are early bird special incentives for our vendors, such as a RM10 free voucher for future purchases, which is funded by the government,” he said in a statement.
In conjunction with the event, an eJazmine hub will also be opened in Lawas, Sarawak to handle the businesses in East Malaysia and Brunei.
Following this, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation's (Matrade) Sabah Director, Ravidran Manogaran, who also covers Brunei, said with the opening of the eJazmine.com hub in Lawas soon, the bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brunei will receive a new dynamic route to expand further through the e-commerce channel.
“In 2021, Malaysia’s trade with Brunei was valued at RM8.03 billion, a significant increase of 70.4% from the year earlier.
“Malaysia’s exports to Brunei registered a triple-digit growth of 108.1% to RM5.78 billion, while Malaysia’s imports from Brunei also grew by 16.5% to RM2.26 billion last year,” he said.
He and the Sabah Matrade director, Mohd Rizal, visited the Consul-General of Brunei in Sabah, Hipni Matarsad, to discuss the current e-commerce scenario in Brunei.
Hipni welcomed the initiative by e-Jazmine.com to include participants from Brunei into their digital platform and expressed his confidence that this will provide another excellent venue for vendors from Brunei to reach a larger market for their products.
“As with other countries in the region, Brunei Darussalam’s digital economy is progressing well. In fact, the impetus to rely more on the digital world for economic and commercial transactions in Brunei was driven by the needs of customers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Since then, digital platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and other social media have been used to meet domestic demand for products. It is inevitable that local vendors would most likely want to venture into the wider market in the region to showcase their products,” he said.
Hipni said the urgency and willingness of e-Jazmine.com to welcome and enter the Brunei market will provide another helping hand to vendors which will certainly further the growth of Brunei’s digital economy.
At the same time, he said the Brunei-Malaysia bilateral trade will be further enhanced by this positive development.
Meanwhile, MDEC Chief Executive Officer Ts. Mahadhir Aziz (pic) welcomed eJazmine.com's foray and highlighted its importance.
“At MDEC, we are committed to driving sustainable and high impact initiatives that will result in the growth of innovation and export in key industries and commercial ecosystems.
“This (e-Jazmine) will further unlock the value of the Digital Economy and can only fortify the growth of Malaysia’s businesses, aligned to the Malaysia Digital initiative which seeks to accelerate Malaysia’s transformation into a digital nation.”
“One of the most significant achievements at the international level was its ties with Indonesia, the Philippines and Bangladesh. Recently, eJazmine.com has begun promoting local merchants from these countries and their products locally,” he said.
For those merchants and wholesalers who are ready for cross-border B2C and B2B businesses, Mahadzir said eJazmine.com provides the distinctive platform to promote export-ready products internationally especially between Malaysia and Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines and Malaysia and Bangladesh respectively.
