Today (18 April), the Court of Appeal released 27-years-old Sam Ke Ting on a bail of RM10,000 and 1 surety.
After spending a few nights in prison, many have expressed their gratitude and relief over the news. Soon after she was released, through her lawyer, Ke Ting has a few messages to fellow Malaysians who have been keeping tabs on her news recently.
Despite her previous verdict that had clearly caused an uproar among the people, Ke Ting’s lawyer, Mohd Faizal Mokhtar said that his client did not blame the judiciary system for her fate and she hopes that people will also do the same.
“Ke Ting is a law abiding citizen and she has always said she would respect the court’s decision. She is prepared to face the consequences if she is found guilty,” Faizal said.
He added that Sam had been attending every court proceeding without missing one and posed no flight risk whatsoever.
In the meantime, Ke Ting also wants the people to look at this matter as a universal justice issue and NOT a racial issue. Faizal said that his client accepts that the incident involved issues that crossed between personal safety and humanitarian aspects.
Faizal also revealed that during the trial, Ke Ting had repeatedly expressed her sympathies with the victims’ families and was saddened by the loss of lives that took place on that fateful night. Ke Ting also revealed that she is thankful as the prison authorities had treated her well.
As for what’s next, Faizal said that they are fighting for personal freedom where someone is innocent until proven guilty, while the prosecution on the other hand is arguing about human values in order to understand how 8 lives can be lost.
