Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a joyful celebration where Muslims celebrate their winning of fasting for a month during Ramadan. One of the sunnah that the Muslims follows is to wear brand new attires during the celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Without any doubt, the Raya season is the busiest and the most profitable season for our local designers.

Shopping for Raya attires used to be what most Muslims look forward to especially the ladies. However, over the years there are a noticeable rise in the pricing for Raya attires. Years before, a simple Raya attire would cost approximately RM120 to RM199. Bear in mind, back then RM199 was quite expensive for an attire.

Fast forward to 2022, things have changed a lot in the fashion industry. The question is, is the change needed or is it simply hungers to make way more money out of the festive season. From an affordable price of RM120 per attire, most brands in the fashion industry are now selling their ‘simple’ design at a price range of RM250 to RM950. Yes, only RM50 away to be an RM1000 kurung set.

For high-end designers, it is understandable that they put up huge price tags as they are using high-quality materials such as French lace, polyblend-woven, high-quality silk, heavy beadings detailing, and so on. These high-end designers also have a T20 and M40 target market to match their high price tag.

The problem is, what about other brands whose target market is the B40? With a starting price of RM250, you would have expected an amazing over-the-top Raya attire from these brands. But no, they are selling simple kurung sets, mostly one-tone colours using cheap materials and this has been going on for quite some time. People are starting to voice out how ridiculous the price tag they need to pay for a ‘simple’ kurung set is.

How can normal people afford to buy RM250-RM950 per attire? One person needs approximately 3 attire sets. That alone cost almost RM1000. What about those that have to buy for their family members? Imagine having 5 children and you have to buy 15 attire sets to get them ready for Raya. Hopefully, this issue is taken seriously and we will see way more affordable prices for Raya attire in the coming years.
