Five TikTok creators making a difference this World Earth Day

KUALA LUMPUR – World Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year to raise awareness of the need to act now to save our beloved planet.

Millions of people, organisations and institutions around the world are pitching in to do their part for Mother Nature, and TikTok, a leading destination for short-form mobile videos, is bringing to light how we can follow in the steps of fellow TikTok creators in making our future a greener one.

This year, TikTok is encouraging all Malaysians to try out these five things to make a positive impact on the earth and possibly incorporate them into their daily lives.

1. Go zero waste

From trying out reusable straws to creating your own fertiliser with banana peels – there is much you can do and learn from @zerowastemalaysia if you are planning to start out on your own zero waste journey! While waste is unavoidable, there are ways to manage it so you can make your household a sustainable one.

2. Grow your own vegetables

Nothing beats the satisfaction of reaping what you sow, and eating the fruits (and vegetables) of your labour can be a rewarding experience. Find out how you can get started with creators such as @diyandgardenwithbibi, who can guide you on how to grow coriander, pineapple and even create your own irrigation system in your backyard. Anything is possible – as long as you are willing to learn and grow!

3. Try plant-based foods

With a wide variety of meatless options becoming more and more readily available, it has gotten much easier to supplement and substitute meat in your diet to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Take a leaf out of the recipe book from @eatwkriss, whose wholesome, easy to follow recipes will have you cooking up a storm! Her vegan recipes for mushroom rendang, kimchi, and eggplant chocolate muffins will leave you wanting for more.

4. Learn fun facts about the Earth

Do you know why cockroaches are some of the most resilient creepy crawlies on earth, or what superpowers a Rafflesia has? These are just some of the plethora of facts that @iqbalahyar talks about in his TikTok videos, where he educates his audiences about science and biology. What better way to take care of the planet than to get to know about it first?

5. Practice sustainable fashion

Trends come and go, but sustainability is always in – instead of purchasing your next outfit on a whim, consider purchasing from thrift or secondhand stores when you can. The clothes sold, while not brand new, are in wearable condition, and could very well be your next favourite item to sport.

With more and more people getting into the thrifting space, consider creators such as @okgostore to see where they set up shop next so you can buy preloved threads – without dressing down the earth.

These curated setups are also usually run by local entrepreneurs, so you get to look fashionable and support the thriving local SME scene all in one go!
