Manchester United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick feels they should target younger players in the transfer market.

Rangnick consultancy role isn't expected to change after he was confirmed Austria coach today.

He said, "My personal opinion is the club should try to find future top star players and develop them. On the other hand, tell me five players that might be like you spoke about (Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe). Haaland is a young player, he's 21.

"This is one of those players I spoke about but, on the other hand, he has developed in the last couple of years to probably one of the most expensive strikers in the world. He could be one of those examples to focus on and to try to identify and find, and then convince players who could be Manchester United players for the next couple of years."

And on whether United is still a club big players want to join, he added: “As a club, with regards to supporters, stadium and quality of training ground, it definitely is, but we also have to be realistic. As soon as other clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are involved, you need some good reasons and somebody has to explain to the players. That is why it is also important what Erik [ten Hag] thinks.

“It is about speaking to those players to find out about their mentality and character. Are they really players who are the best possible fit for the club?"
