
Kota Kinabalu: A woman car thief involved in a dangerous high-speed car chase with the police in February was so while pregnant and allegedly under the influence of drugs, the courts here heard today before handing her a total of five years' jail and RM2,000 fine for her three offences.
Unemployed Martini Abdul Ghani, 34, who was brought before two separate Magistrates, pleaded guilty to stealing a vehicle, driving it in a dangerous manner and obstructing policemen from carrying out their duty between Feb 12 and 14 at separate locations here.
The court also ordered her to be disqualified from holding and applying for a driving licence for five years from today.
Unrepresented, Martini requested a lenient sentence, pleading that she was six months into her pregnancy and expected to give birth in July, adding her five children with her previous husband were being taken care of by her sister.
Police had fired shots at the tyres of the Toyota Hilux pickup that she stole and tried to get away in during the chase which went viral.
Martini is also facing another charge of taking drugs under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act which will be mentioned on April 21 pending the chemist's report.
