The Covid-19 pandemic has essentially resulted in a 2 year lockdown of our borders with us not being able to travel anywhere on a whim as we did pre Covid.

However, as the clock struck 12am on April 1st, Malaysians were excited to return to a sense of normality.

The Straits Times reported that minutes before the land borders were set to reopen between Malaysia and Singapore, at 11:59pm yesterday (31 March), the waiting crowd began to move.

By 10:50pm, more than 200 people, mainly Malaysians, were waiting patiently. Whilst at the border checkpoint of Tuas, around 500 motorbike riders waited eagerly as time went by, with some revving their machines in anticipation.

When midnight came, thousands of people crossed the Causeway by foot, car and motorbike across the checkpoints, many of whom were heading towards home or meeting family members who were waiting on the other side to pick them up.

Cars and motorcyles tooted their horns as they drove into the complex, while people on foot clapped and cheered maintaining the jubilant mood as everyone tried to quickly clear the immigration checks.

It was reported that the initial rush continued till about 3am before it picked up again this morning at 6am.
