Suhoor and Football.
English football brings cheer and entertainment throughout the world but during the month of Ramadan, it gives the diehard Muslim football fans two reasons to stay awake during unearthly hours. The first to watch the games and the second to be nice and ready for Suhoor which is the first meal of the day before they faithfully abstain from eating again for 12 hours.
Manchester United vs Liverpool.
Somehow it seemed that there were more than 11 players on the Liverpool side there was a pool of red shirts swarming into Manchester United’s half to drown them. MU donned their home away colours and were also left in the blues conceding 4 goals. Liverpool’s Luis Diaz opened the onslaught with a nifty pass from Salah, who added to the score with the second goal for his club hence ending his no goals jinx for the past 8 matches. In the second half, the demolition process saw Sadio Mane convert a pass from Luis Diaz as the third and Salah nailing the red devils with the fourth and final one.
Cristiano Ronaldo and MU.
Once an invincible club built by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson was being dismantled goal by goal. Manchester United’s most ostentatious move to procure Cristiano Ronaldo did not see them pulling higher up the table in a hurry however Ronaldo may have found his form again after his hattrick against Norwich City. It was a tale of two misfortunes for MU and Cristiano Ronaldo, one was that MU missed Cristiano Ronaldo’s services against Liverpool and the second was that he had to attend his newborn son’s funeral. The good news for him was that he was a proud father to a baby girl, the second twin that survived and salvaged some happiness for the couple but no such luck for the Red Devils who only saw red. So far Ronaldo has scored 15 times for MU in the past 26 matches but the 37-year old’s finest stint for this club was in 2007/2008 when he scored 31 times in 34 games.
Cashing in on Ramadan.
All night open eateries will see clients waiting up to watch the live games while spending good money on food and drinks with many waiting for Suhoor. The holy month has brought back good fortunes once again after the testing times during the Pandemic. Nowadays it is almost a tradition to break fast in restaurants which are known as Iftar. Many Muslims especially when both spouses are gainfully employed may find this practice to be more convenient.
No Violence
So far we have not had or heard of any violence between football fans in the restaurants where they hang out to watch the games. Thank God this is not Britain where football fans get riled up and attack rival fans.
Ramadan Mubarak and a Selamat Hari Raya or ID Mubarak to every Muslim and football fan. ED.
