The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has announced that BigPay, GrabPay, ShopeePay, and Touch ‘n Go eWallet have been selected as the official e-wallet service providers for the ePemula programme, which is set to begin mid-April.

While the ministry did not provide any explanation for selecting the four e-wallet service providers as the official e-wallets of ePemula, it did state that the four parties have a reach of more than 1.2 million retailers.

In its statement, MoF also took the opportunity to urge small and medium enterprise traders (SMEs) to register with the e-wallet service providers. This is so that they can accept electronic or cashless payments, and benefit from the implementation of ePemula.

Introduced under Budget 2022, the ePemula programme is intended to encourage the use of cashless transactions among the public, specifically youths. Under the programme, those aged between 18 and 20 years old, as well as full-time students in tertiary education will receive a one-off RM150 e-wallet credit via any of the selected official e-wallets.

The ePemula programme is the latest in a line of similar initiatives, with previous efforts including eTunai Rakyat, ePenjana, and eBelia
