Man jailed for hiding stolen car

Kota Kinabalu: A 30-year-old man was jailed three years and five months on Friday, for hiding a stolen car.

Thomson Yap admitted before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to hiding a stolen Toyota Vios belonging to Alfat Juniri at 4.40pm on March 25 this year in the bushes at Kg Randagong, Ranau.

The charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between six months and seven years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

Yap, who was not represented, requested for a lenient sentence to be run from the date of his arrest.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, informed the court that Yap has three previous conviction records, which were all drug-related offences.

Kelvan applied for a heavier sentence taking into account Yap’s previous conviction record and the present offence.

Lovely ordered Yap to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest and ordered the car to be returned to the rightful owner.

Meanwhile, two individuals were each fined RM1,500 or two months jail for having gambling paraphernalia.

Md Faize Jospin, 26, and Lily Layim, 29, pleaded guilty to having nine slips of Wahui riddles and RM805 at the staircase next to a snooker premises at Dongonggon town in Penampang at 1.30pm on Dec 23, 2019.

The court heard from the prosecution that the duo were arrested by a police team, who raided the area based on information of gambling activity there.

Faize and Lily were jointly charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act, which carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

Unrepresented, they requested for a lower fine.
