Leeds United winger Raphinha has recalled growing up in Brazil's favelas.

Raphinha appreciates what he has now after his childhood in Porto Alegre.

He told Sky Sports: "It's something you have to experience, that's life in the favela. There is no doubt that the reality is very different from that of the United Kingdom and Europe.

"In the favela you feel very disconnected from the rest of the country.

"Often the easiest way to make money is the wrong way. It's part of life there, there's a glass ceiling and an inability to break out of it and aspire to an honest life, a working life, a better life.

"It's hard to get out without resorting to something illegal like drug dealing.

"Football saved me. Not only did it allow me to change my life, but it also allowed me to become an example for children and adults who may also have difficult lives, coming from similar places."
