Mayor’s Cup to feature record number of boxers

Kota Kinabalu: A record number of boxers will be taking part in the Mayor’s Cup Sabah Championship to be held at the Damai Multi-Purpose Hall here starting this afternoon (Saturday) at 2pm.

According to Sabah Boxing Association President Datuk Orlando Harumal, a total of 89 boxers including six women from 11 teams are competing in the three-day event.

“This is the biggest turn-up in the competition’s history with 83 men and six women boxers. It is going to be an exciting affair and the public are most welcome to come and the entrance is free,” he said on Friday.

The 11 teams taking part are defending champions Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kota Belud, Keningau, Papar, Sandakan, Tawau, Ranau, Tambunan, Tongod and the Armed Forces (ATM).

Meanwhile, Mayor Datuk Noorliza Alip as patron is expected to grace the opening ceremony at 1.55pm.
