Remember His Excellency Dato’ Mohd Tariq Suffian our Ambassador to United Arab Emirates (UAE) who was unceremoniously sent home by our Foreign Minister, Saifuddin Abdullah during a controversial state visit of our Honorable Prime Minister to the kingdom?
It was a sad day for the ambassador who was forced to vacate his post in a great hurry and returned to Malaysia in disgrace. For the public, it was indeed disconcerting to see a highly respected career diplomat treated in a manner that was demeaning in the eyes of the nation.
Anyway, it was heartwarming to see him being welcomed by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor during the recent Ramadan for iftar followed by “terawikh” prayers at the Istana Alam Shah in Klang.
An Instagram posting dated 30 April stated that DYMM Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah AlHaj “berkenan berbuka puasa dan menunaikan solat terawih bersama Mantan Duta Besar Malaysia ke UAE YgBhg Dato’ Mohd Tariq Suffian di Istana Alam Shah Klang”. Briefly the HRH Sultan of Selangor was pleased to host our former ambassador for iftar and terawih at Istana Alam Shah.
The posting also noted that HRH the Sultan had previously awarded Dato’ Mohd Tariq his datokship in 2021 in recognition of his services to the country.
For a professional diplomat whose career hung in the balance because of an unfortunate “misunderstanding” on the part of some politicians the kindness extended by the Sultan was probably a blessing and a well-deserved recognition. We hope it helped lessen the stress resulting from his hasty and unceremonious departure from UAE in March.
We look forward to seeing Dato’ Mohd Tariq back to active duty soon, perhaps in another part of the world. A diplomat of his calibre deserves better treatment than what was accorded by our Foreign Minister.
The Sultan’s kindness and mindfulness ought to be emulated by politicians and Senior Civil Servants when dealing with
ambassadors who represent our country conscientiously throughout the world.
They are indeed our front liners, overseas.
