In Tanah Merah, Kelantan, police arrested a primary school security guard to assist in the investigation of an obscenity case involving a male student who was participating in the qiamullail program with other classmates at the school’s surau.
The 38-year-old temporary security guard was detained after the victim’s father filed a police report. When the 12-year-old victim was picked up from school at 10.15 a.m. the next day, he described the incident to his parents.
Wan Zulfikri Wan Othman, the Tanah Merah District Police Chief, said the incident occurred at the prayer hall around midnight.
“The victim was in the qiamullail program on the night of the event and was sleeping in the surau with a school friend when he was reportedly raped by the suspect.” According to the Police Chief, the student was transferred to Tanah Merah Hospital for evaluation.
The unfortunate event was discovered after the victim reported to his parents the suspect’s behaviour. The student’s parents filed a police report, according to him, and he was referred to Tanah Merah Hospital for further testing.
“As a result, a 38-year-old security guard was arrested and sent to Tanah Merah Court to get a remand order,” he added. The investigation was carried out in accordance with Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act (AKSTK) 2017, according to Wan Zulfikri.
It is unclear if the security guard had a criminal record. However, there were a few cases in the past where individuals with a criminal record were still trusted for a highly responsible jobs such as security guards, which is supposed to increase the safety of students in school. These individuals then ended up harming the students instead of protecting them.
Not to say that individuals with a criminal record do not deserve a second chance, but it is time to completely banned these individuals from a highly responsible jobs that exposed them to vulnerable children.
