The French government are insisting Liverpool fans were to blame for the chaos at the Stade de France on Saturday.

The Champions League final between the Reds and victors Real Madrid was delayed as ticket-holders were pepper-sprayed by police and left fearing for their safety.

Thousands of supporters were forced to wait for hours to get inside the stadium after being funnelled into dangerously cramped areas around the ground.

There were also reports from fans of attacks and muggings from local gangs amid the chaos.

France's Sports Minister, Amelie Oudea-Castera, this morning stood by their claims that the chaos was the fault of Liverpool fans with fake tickets.

“What happened, first of all, was this mass gathering of the British supporters of the Liverpool club, without tickets, or with fake tickets," she told French radio RTL.

Meanwhile, a meeting was being held this morning between UEFA, local authorities, police and final organisers including the French Football Federation to review the events, which led to a 36-minute delay to the kick-off.
