MIRI – The Customs and Immigration checkpoint at the Sarawak-Sabah borders has extended its operating hours from 6am to 6pm daily to 6am to 10pm, to facilitate the heavy traffic flow due to the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
In an update by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit, the extension of the border’s operating hours began last night.
The state’s checkpoint is located in Merapok, in the Lawas district, while its Sabah counterpart is located in Sindumin, in the Sipitang district.
The unit said both state immigration heads had agreed to the extra operation hours.
“Both sides are seeing heavy traffic congestion. Since a week ago, there have been long queues of vehicles heading into Sabah from Sarawak.
“On the Sabah side there is also heavy traffic entering into Sarawak and long waiting lines.
“The traffic situation is expected to surge due to the coming Hari Raya and the extension of the opening hours will help ease the flow,” the unit said. – The Vibes, May 1, 2022
