TAWAU: A 46-year-old civil servant was sent to prison for 20 years and ordered to be caned six times by the Sessions Court here, Tuesday, on two counts of sexual offence against his friend’s teenage daughter.
Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud meted out the sentence to the man after he was found guilty and convicted of both charges.
The man was found guilty of harassing the victim, 15, twice in the toilet of a government quarters in Jalan Air Panas at 3.30am on Jan 12, 2021.
He was sentenced to 10 years’ jail and three strokes of whipping on each charge.
The court ordered the man to serve the jail sentence consecutively.
However, the man, who was represented by counsel Amli Nohin, was granted a stay of execution pending an appeal to the High Court.
It was revealed in the trial that the victim and her father went to the man’s to house to be treated in traditional method due to the spirits disturbance problem.
The man initially gave treatment in the living room before informing to bathe the victim in the toilet, then molested her.
He was charged under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping if convicted.
