Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admits they blew a big opportunity after defeat to Crystal Palace.

Saints went into half-time in a position of strength, having been headed into a ninth-minute lead by Oriol Romeu, but they were undone by goals from Eberechi Eze on the hour mark and then Wilfried Zaha in added time.

"It was a big chance today for making a big step forward," he said. "We had everything in our hands and then we gave it away in a simple way. It is simply very disappointing.

"The irritating thing is that we are not able to defend the two situations that lead to a goal, because this was one time an easy ball we lost in midfield, after we spoke about at half-time what we wanted to do, playing forward and not back or to the side. Then the second goal, it was not that we have been exposed, we had eight players behind the ball and still were unable to block the shot around the box. It's simply very disappointing.

"I think that we have definitely this season played better football than we are doing at the moment, that's for sure.

"It's also the moment at the end of the season where it's about taking results. This was about when you are in the lead, defend proper and don't concede. We had the chance today and we gave it away in an easy way."
