With public attention focused on Mat Lanjut involving many deaths in Johor, we have overlooked their older siblings, Mat Rempit who are still very much alive and causing havoc in Penang.
Just when we thought we had rid ourselves of this road menace, Bernama reported a total of 50 Mat Rempit were arrested for performing dangerous stunts and racing illegally at the Seagate beach area along the Lim Chong Eu Highway in Bayan Lepas during the first weekend of Aidilfitri recently.
This group of Mat Rempit frequently gathers along Seagate beach, for illegal racing and for performing “Superman-style” stunts at night during weekends. The Seagate beach area is a hotspot for “Mat Rempit” activities because of its long and straight stretch, an ideal location for illegal racing.
They were surrounded by police in a sting operation that started at midnight on 8 May. Apparently, they tried to escape by speeding but failed because the route from Batu Maung to the city centre was cordoned off by the police.
The police subsequently detained 50 men, mostly young adults in their 30s, and confiscated 50 motorcycles and two cars. They issued a total of 150 summonses for various offences.
Bernama reported that police carried out the operation in response to complaints by the public regarding “activities of motorcyclists who often performed dangerous rides emitting loud noises”. The noise and stunts must have been a nuisance to residents in the area to prompt such action.
We do not know how many more Mat Rempit there are left and to what extent they are involved in such dangerous activities and where they often congregate for these illegal races but we believe that we have yet to wipe out these daredevils stunts on our roads.
Only the public would know. They would have to be the eyes and ears of the nation. They would have to report for action to be taken by authorities.
So, the next time you see something illegal, say something and report if you must if we would like to stop this road nuisance.
We cannot wait for the next Sam (as in the case of 8 Mat Lanjut who died on the road) to drive accidentally into them one late night or at 3 in the morning to be precise before we take action again.
Roads are not playgrounds, anywhere in the country, be it Johor or Penang.
