At last “it happened”. Not the landing of the Americans. A local rebellion started on October 9th night. It was a Saturday I think. We had no calendar since the beginning of 1943 unless we made our own. I was afraid of keeping any notes or diary lest the MP (military police) get at my throat. On that night I was not in bed as yet. It was a dark night about 9:30 p.m.

A lorry was going towards the Town with a jingling noise. It was an unusual thing for a lorry to be moving about at such a time. We had our own notions about it. At the back of my house there was a double storey building facing the main road.
