Damaged pipeline cuts water supply to three-quarters of Miri

MIRI – A lawmaker is calling for action to be taken against those who damaged the main water pipeline that resulted in a supply disruption affecting the majority of the residents here.

Miri MP Dr Teo Yu Keng said he was told that three quarters of Miri is affected, claiming the pipe damage was caused by road contractors doing upgrading work in part of the Pan Borneo Highway yesterday.

“The Northern Sarawak Water Supply Board must initiate a move to penalise those guilty of damaging the pipeline. The board must also be able to respond immediately to the damages and to activate mitigation measures,” he told The Vibes.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii said the water supply disruption was caused by damages to a section of the pipeline.

“A 1,100mm section of the main pipeline was broken, which had to be emptied to enable repair works that are now in progress.”

A check with the Northern Water Supply Board indicated that the repairs could last until this evening. – The Vibes, June 10, 2022
