[UPDATED] Two children missing after bathing in river found drowned

MIRI – The bodies of two children who were swept away by strong currents at a remote river in Kapit division in central Sarawak have been recovered following two days of searching.

The remains of Chelsea Charity Darrie Ricky, a girl aged 10, and Damien Dashlley Sedan Donny, a boy aged 9, were found at about 10am today in Sg Rajang.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement that the children were from Rumah Ekaw, a riverine settlement at a locality called Nanga Semawang in the interior part of Kapit.

“The two children had gone missing in the river on Tuesday evening at around 5pm when they went into the waters for bathing with their family members.

“They were swept away by the river current. Search and rescue teams had carried out extensive searches after being alerted about the incident, but could not locate them until this morning.

“The body of the boy was found in the river near the Rumah Ekaw longhouse after it was spotted by family members.

“The body of the girl was found about 20km away near a school,” the department said.

The bodies have been handed over to police, it added.

In a separate case, three men and four women had a lucky escape after they went for a boat outing at the riverine Aman Resort in Lubok Antu district in southern Sarawak at 6.30pm yesterday.

Their boat capsized on the river, but fortunately they managed to swim to safety.

All the seven have been sent to the Sri Aman hospital for medical checks, Sarawak Bomba added. – The Vibes, June 2, 2022
