Crystal Palace chief Steve Parish has defended the club's transfer strategy.
Roy Hodgson expressed concerns about the lack of depth in his squad after Saturday's win over Aston Villa.
"They were the priority areas [full-backs and a striker]," Parish told the HLTCO podcast. "It was a difficult summer for those particular positions we felt.
"In the summer when we were looking for those positions we felt the prices were very inflated, there was a lot of risk in some of the options that were out there.
"It is very easy to waste money, spending money per se doesn't do anything but make everybody happy for a few weeks because you've got an expensive signing.
"Our job is to get it right and we didn't feel that the right deals were out there for us and that we would be better off holding whatever money we had back for future transfer windows."
Parish added: "We've got a three-year plan for our squad and the funds that we have available have got to migrate this squad over three years.
"There is a big picture plan that we have got to try and execute and there are, unfortunately, funds required within this club everywhere... all the things we are working on suck funds."
