Roma have turned down former Manchester City and England midfielder Jack Rodwell.
Corriere Dello Sport says this is because coach Paulo Fonseca was impressed by defender Gianluca Mancini against AC Milan on Sunday.
Rodwell was spotted at Roma's training ground last week as he looked to undergo a medical ahead of sealing a shock move to the Serie A club.
The 28-year-old has been a free agent after leaving Championship side Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season and looked as though he was on the verge of a move to Italy.
He spent last season with Blackburn, where he made 22 appearances in all competitions.
