Chris Smalling did not want to be part of the furniture at Manchester United.

The Red Devils center back admits that he is missing his familiar surroundings, after going out on loan to Roma for the season.

But Smalling believes it was the right decision, as he would not have been first choice under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this term.

"I do [miss Man Utd] because I was there for so many years and I was used to be being part of the furniture there," Smalling told talkSPORT.

"But I am enjoying my new chapter, and hopefully I can keep affecting performances on the pitch and we can have a successful season.

"But right now I'm really enjoying being in Italy."
