Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says they'll be announcing the club captain "soon".
United are yet to announce who will wear the armband next season following Antonio Valencia's departure.
Asked if David de Gea would be permanent captain, Solskjaer said: "We'll announce something soon.
We've got different captain types. There are vocal leaders and players like David, who has merit with what he's done and he'll play the majority of the games."
De Gea is finally set to end his contract stand-off by agreeing a new long-term deal with United and the captaincy could be a sweetener for the Spaniard.
