Manchester United hero Paul Ince was happy with Sunday's win over Chelsea, but believes there is much to do to bridge the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Ince says there is plenty of work ahead for the Red Devils despite a stunning 4-0 win over the Blues at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Ince said: "Man United's opening game against Chelsea was great but they played into their hands. I've said before that Ole's side need to get off to a good start, hit the ground running, and that's exactly what they did.

"Chelsea weren't ready for it at all, they weren't ready for how open Man United were playing. It was nice to see some positives while watching them - I've criticised Jesse Lingard a lot, last season I thought he was bang average, but if he plays like he did yesterday and proves me wrong there'll be good things ahead of him.

"Ultimately, as a United player you are all always going to be scrutinised and picked apart whether that's by ex-players, pundits, fans, or the media.

"That's the way it is and it will always be like that, and the best thing you can do is prove people wrong. You're at Man United so you'll always have to prove people wrong and I felt Jesse did that against Chelsea. I hope he keeps it up.

"It's easy to get carried away, but you want to see pace, goals, and excitement at Old Trafford and that's what we saw on Sunday. The score line flattered United but the main thing is they have that confidence now, going into the season.

"I still believe they aren't going to bridge that big gap between them and the likes of Man City or Liverpool."
