Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark sought talks with manager Steve Bruce over his future in the summer.
The Evening Chronicle says the centre-back spoke to Bruce after interest was shown in the Ireland defender.
Crystal Palace were among the sides who looked at Clark, who made his first start of the season on Sunday against Manchester United.
But Bruce told he that he wanted to assess" his options, and utilised Clark who has been waiting for his chance".
