Liverpool must sort out a new contract for Joel Matip.

That is the opinion of club legend John Aldridge.

The former Reds star believes that Matip has developed into a key central defender and must be kept at all costs.

In his column with the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge wrote: "The only thing that stuck out for me watching Joel Matip against Arsenal was the improvement in his passing.

"So far this season, it hadn't been great, but he had his confidence back on Saturday and now he is getting closer to 100 per cent.

"His goal was a really good header too. It come off the side of his head and he knew how to glance it because of the pace of the great delivery from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

"Take it from me, that was a really good header and it was important they got that opener before half time.

"What you can say about Matip is he is keeping Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren out of the side right now. That is all he can do.

"From a Liverpool point of view, he has only got a year left on his contract and that is a slight worry.

"Liverpool need to keep an eye on that and I hope they can come to terms with him and his agent, because he is getting better with age and is now first choice at the heart of the defence."
