A cross-party alliance of strange bedfellows

OPPOSITION leaders held a recent special discussion to deliberate on the proposed formation of a cross-party alliance aimed at reinforcing the opposition’s role both within and beyond Parliament.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin shared the development in a Facebook post, stating that the initiative seeks to strengthen checks and balances and establish a unified front on matters of national importance.

“I held discussions this evening with leaders of non-government parties to gather their views on the proposal to form a cross-party alliance,” Muhyiddin said.

“The formation of this alliance is intended to establish a common position on issues affecting the people and the country.”

Among those present were Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, GERAKAN president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, Parti Rakyat India Malaysia (MIPP) president Punithan Paramsiven, PEJUANG president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (PUTRA) president Datuk Dr Ibrahim Ali, and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chair S Arutchelvan Subramaniam.

Also, in attendance were acting president of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) Amira Aisya, youth chief of the People's Progressive Party (PPP) Sathiah Sudakaran, Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (BERJASA) president Zamani Ibrahim, Bersepakat Hak Rakyat Malaysia (Urimai) president Prof Dr P Ramasamy, and Malaysian Advancement Party (MAP) president P Waytha Moorthy.

Muhyiddin noted that all attendees responded positively to the proposal.

“God willing, I will present the views raised in this meeting at the upcoming Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council Meeting,” he said. - July 19, 2025
