On the afternoon of April 18, 2026, something quietly extraordinary unfolded. It was not a cabinet meeting or an economic summit—yet the spacious ground beside the PPTD House held enough experience and intellect to shape a nation all over again.

This was a gathering of Malaysia’s former “captains”—retired officers of the elite Pegawai Tadbir dan Diplomatik (PTD)—reuniting in celebration of 2026 edition of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Event.

These are the individuals who once stood at the helm of Malaysia’s progress. In their prime, they crafted policies, steered national strategies, and built the economic foundations that underpin the country today. They managed finances, developed infrastructure, safeguarded strategic resources, and upheld a standard of governance where integrity was non-negotiable. Their decisions were never about short-term gain—they were about shaping generations.

A Masterclass in Humility

The guest list read like a roll call of the nation’s administrative elite: former Chief Secretaries to the Government, Directors-General of the Economic Planning Unit, and Secretary-Generals from key ministries including Finance, MITI, and Health. Many carried titles such as Tan Sri and Datuk—honours earned through decades of service.

Yet in this informal setting, what stood out was not status, but humility.

There were no airs, no hierarchies—only warmth and camaraderie. These were individuals who once held immense power, now engaging as old friends, sharing laughter and stories. To witness such stature paired with such groundedness was both rare and deeply moving.

A Spirit That Endures

In keeping with the Prime Minister’s call for restraint during the current energy crisis, the PPTD Alumni chose to self-fund the event.

The response was immediate and generous.

Contributions poured in—not merely to host a gathering, but to preserve a tradition of connection. The result was a beautifully crafted occasion, highlighted by a generous feast, including two roasted lambs. It was yet another reflection of the PTD ethos: whether planning a nation’s future or organising a simple reunion, excellence is always the standard.

Beyond Titles and Protocol

The day revealed a side of these distinguished figures seldom seen by the public.

With Ms. Grace Okuda energising the programme as MC, the atmosphere was light-hearted and joyous. In a memorable moment, former Treasury Secretary-General Tan Sri Samsudin Hitam took to the floor and sang, delighting the crowd and dissolving any remaining formality.

Time, of course, had left its mark—grey hair, slower bodies, quieter voices. Yet when old colleagues met, the years seemed to fall away. Eyes lit up, laughter rang out, and for a moment, they were once again the young officers who had embarked on a shared journey of service.

Credit is due to the organising team, especially Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali (President of Alumni PPTD), Tan Sri Nurizah, and Datuk Abdullah Kassim, supported by respected figures such as Tan Sri Jawhar, Tan Sri Yong Poh Kon, Johan Jaafar, and Datuk David Chua. The presence of the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Yang Berhormat Tan Sri Dato’ Johari Abdul, in his Chief Scout of Malaysia uniform, added a distinctive touch to the occasion.

The True Measure of Legacy

As the gathering drew to a close, one truth became evident: with time, the value of moments like these only deepens.

Phones were filled with photographs, but more importantly, hearts were filled with gratitude. Speeches were brief—because at this stage in life, presence speaks louder than words.

To those who attended and contributed, you helped sustain something invaluable. To those who could not make it, your absence was felt—and your presence will be awaited at the next reunion.

In the end, the legacy of these men and women is not only written in policies or institutions. It lives on in the enduring bonds they share—a brotherhood and sisterhood forged in service to the nation.

And perhaps that is their greatest achievement of all.
