SK Hynix made its Nasdaq debut this week in what turned into one of the largest share offerings in the exchange's history. The South Korean memory chipmaker raised roughly 28 billion US dollars by listing American Depositary Receipts under the ticker SKHY, with proceeds earmarked for new fabrication facilities and advanced chip equipment including EUV scanners.

The listing lands at a moment when memory chips, specifically the high bandwidth memory used in AI servers, have become one of the tightest bottlenecks in the entire AI buildout. SK Hynix holds the top global share in HBM at 56.4 percent and ranks second overall in DRAM including HBM at 29.1 percent, putting it in direct competition with Samsung and Micron for a supply chain that simply can't produce chips fast enough for current demand. Shares jumped 13 percent on their first day of trading, closing at 168.01 US dollars after opening at 170, with SK Hynix chairman Chey Tae-won telling CNBC that customer demand for chips remains "enormous" even as the company plans to double capacity within five years.

Part of what makes this listing significant is where the money is going. SK Hynix is building a new production facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, its first in the United States, dedicated to advanced packaging, the process of connecting and stacking individual chips into the larger systems used in AI computing. The company is also expanding capacity in South Korea itself, backed by a broader government sponsored chip investment programme worth roughly 576 billion US dollars aimed at cementing the country's position in the global semiconductor race.

Malaysia shows up in this picture too, though from a different angle. A separate analysis of global AI capital spending cited Malaysia alongside Saudi Arabia, China, and the Scandinavian economies as among the next largest tiers of AI infrastructure investment relative to GDP, sitting at roughly a quarter of the pace set by the United States. That positions Malaysia as a meaningful, if smaller, player in the broader AI hardware ecosystem that companies like SK Hynix ultimately supply into, from data centre buildouts to the semiconductor assembly and testing operations already established in Penang and Kulim, two hubs that have spent decades building up exactly the kind of back end chip packaging and testing expertise that the global memory shortage is now putting a premium on.

None of this changes overnight because of one listing, but it does underline how tightly Malaysia's own tech and manufacturing sectors are stitched into a global chip supply chain where a Korean company's Nasdaq debut can move markets thousands of kilometres away, and where the next few years of AI infrastructure spending will likely keep flowing through exactly the kind of assembly and packaging work Malaysia has quietly specialised in for years.
