It all started in 2019. We were given two pineapple crowns. I planted it in the garden and got to taste a small fruit about two years later. I found out it was the species called ‘Crystal Pineapple’. It was absolutely delicious.
Despite having to wait for a long time before getting to enjoy the fruit, I decided to try planting this species. My next fruit was half eaten by a tree shrew even though it was still green. I was patiently waiting to harvest this second fruit until one day, I discovered it was already half eaten from behind by an animal. It was such a disappointment.
I refused to give up. The next round I had two pineapple plants growing. This time they were planted in two big flower pots at a different location where there was better sunlight. They grew well and were bigger this round. A few weeks ago (July 2026), one pineapple was stolen – nicely cut off, clearly harvested by a human this time. Of course, I was very upset. I could not believe that someone would trespass a private property, just to steal a pineapple! Then less than a week later, my husband came in and said, “You won’t believe it! Just come and see,” beckoning me to go out to the garden. The next pineapple which was quite big but still green was also stolen! My reaction this time was totally different. No more questions of ‘WHY’ but a silent resolution not to plant pineapples anymore.
This experience showed me how much man’s morality has spiraled through the years. Depraved man no longer has respect for laws or fellow human beings. They are simply self-centred, self-gratifying and their conscience seared.
I began to think. If a simple fruit planted within the house compound can be so tempting, what more if it is that which is more valuable? This is the seed of corruption, seemingly harmless by the one who steals. From a little seed, corruption grows. So, we need to be very vigilant. It may be something small – white lies, taking stationery from the office, misusing our office time and the like. The temptation is always there. The excuses or rationalizations are also there. What would your decision be if you know that Someone is watching?
Quoting A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, “Where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. When there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home. When there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world.”
Citing a verse in the Bible (Proverbs 29:2), it says: When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.
May God help us to always choose righteousness so that Malaysia will rejoice!
